In 1871 the Delphic Society was founded at the Geneseo State Normal School in upstate New York. With chapter affiliations throughout the region, the organization became known as The Delphic Fraternity.

By the late 1930s only one of the original eight chapters remained officially active: the historic Zeta chapter at New Paltz, NY. The Zeta Chapter traces its history back to 1889 at the New Paltz Normal School.

In the 1950s the New Paltz chapter became briefly associated with a national fraternity, however today it is an autonomous organization.

In 1962 the brotherhood became a legal not-for-profit membership entity by incorporating itself as The Delphic Fraternity of New Paltz, Inc. (Incorporated today as The Delphic Fraternity, Inc.)

In 1972 the Delphic Fraternity at New Paltz became inactive.

In 1987 the legendary organization was re-established as Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau Fraternity, the first official multicultural fraternity formed on the East Coast.

In 1998 the fraternity became a founding member of the National Multicultural Greek Council.

In 2003 the Theta chapter was founded at Binghamton University, becoming the first Delphic chapter formed in the 21st century.

In 2009 the Kappa chapter was founded at the University of Virginia, becoming the first Delphic chapter formed outside the Northeast Region.

In October 2011 the historic multicultural fraternity became 140 years old.
